Phone line error detection with email alert

In this article, you will learn about setting up a system that detects an error in a phone line and sends an email notification to a predefined email address. The Ozeki Alarm System is a powerful and easy-to-use alarm system application that will check your phone line periodically and notifies you in case of downtime. Developing this system will take about 20 minutes. We assume that you are familiar with SMS communication technology and the Ozeki Alarm System application. Now don't waste any more time. Phone line error detection with email alert (Video tutorial)

In this video, we are going to show you how to set up a system that will automatically detect an error in a phone line and will send an email notification in case of downtime. The video will start with the Ozeki 10 home page and will take you to the first sent email notification. You will learn how to install an alarm source and a notification channel. The video is only 4 minutes long but it is very detailed. You will have no problem with following the steps.

Phone System app

The first step of the process is to open the Phone System application. To do so, open the Ozeki 10 home page (Figure 1). There you will find the Phone System icon. Click it twice to launch it and start setting up the error detection system.

Create a phone line

Now you need to create your phone line. To do so, click the 'Outside lines' button on the side of the window. There you will find the blue 'Create new Phone line' button. You will now see the 'Phone line details' panel. There you will be able to provide an 'SIP settings'. You need a display name, login credentials, domain number, and port number (Figure 2). Provide those details and click the 'Ok' button.

List of phone lines

In the Phone lines list, you can see the newly created working phone line. You can get more information about the phone line here, with the help of the 'Details' button. In this list, you will be able to see all the previously created phone lines with the new one.

Open the Alarm System app

Now you need to create the alarm source for the alarm system. To do so, open the Alarm System app. You can find the icon on the desktop of Ozeki 10. Click it twice to open the application (Figure 4). There you will be able to create the alarm source.

Choose the 'Connection alert' option

To install a new connection alert source, you need to open the 'Install alarm source' list. There you will be able to find the 'Connection alert' list item. Click the blue 'Install' button to start the installation process (Figure 5). In this install list, you can see all your alarm source options.

Choose which connection to monitor

In the 'Monitored connection' group box, you can set which phone line you wish to monitor with the alarm system. Set the newly made phone line connection as the monitored connection and press the 'Ok' button under the group box (Figure 6). You can get more information using the little icon next to the text bar.

Choose the e-mail connection

Click the 'Channels' button on the toolbar. Now you will see the 'Install notification channel' list. Here, you need to choose which type of notification channel you wish to use. You have 4 options. You can send a contact ID, e-mail, chat message, or SMS. In this case, you need to choose the E-mail client connection option. Click the blue 'Install' button to proceed to the next step (Figure 7).

Choose SMTP client

In the next list, you need to choose which type of email client you wish to send notifications to. In this case, the best option is the SMTP one (Figure 8). Click the blue 'Install' button next to the title and proceed to the next step.

Provide settings

In the general tab of the new notification channel, you need to provide some settings. In the 'From' group box, you need to provide the name and the address of the default sender. This will be visible if you receive an alarm from the system. In the 'SMTP Server' group box, you need to provide a host address and a port number. Below these text bars, you will find a place for the login credentials (Figure 9). Provide a username and a password that you will use for the login.

Provide recipient address

On Figure 10, you can provide the default recipient's address. The alarm notification will be sent to this address by default. Click the Advanced tab and find the 'To' group box. You can get more information about every data field using the 'help' icon.

Create a new Route

In the next step, you need to create a new Route. Search for the Routes button on the toolbar of the Ozeki Alarm System. Find the blue 'Create new Route' button. Click it to see the 'Route details' panel on the right side. There, provide the address where the notification will come from and the address where it should be forwarded. The 'From' section should be the connection alert's address, the 'To' should be the SMTP client's address (Figure 11).

Events tab

Now you are finished with the setup process. You can see the log of the report sending process on Figure 12. You can get more information about the process here. The Events tab serves as a place to monitor your connection.

Received Email

On the last figure, you can see the email that is sent in case of a server error. As you can see, the sender of the email is the address you have provided earlier. The subject is a notification that the server is now offline (Figure 13).
